Historic victory! Switzerland beat Italy in the European Championship thanks to Glarus' footballer Freuler

Updated: Jul 10

Last night, Switzerland celebrated a historic victory in Berlin's Olympic Stadium. Our national team beat the defending champions 2-0 to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

The game began on an even keel, with both teams feeling each other out. The big moment came in the 37th minute: Remo Freuler from Glarus gave Switzerland the lead with a precise shot. The joy in the stadium was immense!

After the break, Italy pressed for the equaliser, but the Swiss defence stood like a bulwark. In the 46th minute, Ruben Vargas scored a remarkable goal to decide the game. Switzerland played the game cleverly to the end and celebrated a deserved victory.

The dream of winning the European Championship title lived on after this victory! Switzerland met the strong team from England in the quarter-finals in Düsseldorf on 6 July 2024 - and unfortunately only lost on penalties by 5 goals to 3.

Remo Freuler was born on 15 April 1992 in Ennenda, the son of Marcel and Sabine Freuler. His grandparetns are Jakob Freuler and Rosa Marie Disch. Remo Freuler spent his junior years at FC Hinwil and FC Winterthur. In July 2010, he moved to Grasshopper Club Zurich, where he made his first appearances in the Super League. His football career to date has taken him to FC Winterthur (2012-2014), FC Luzern (2014-2016), Atalanta Bergamo (2016-2022) and, since 2023, on loan to FC Bologna from Nottingham Forest. Freuler has been part of the Swiss national football team since 2017 and has scored 9 goals to date.
